Q. Is it possible to encrypt InterMapper communications?

A. All communications between InterMapper and its clients (IMRA, IMDC, web browser, etc.) can be encrypted using SSL. To turn on encryption, go to Server Settings for the Remote Server or Web Server and check the Use a secure protocol (SSLv3/TLS) box.

By default, InterMapper uses a Dartware-generated certificate based on a 1,024 bit RSA key. Although this encrypts the data being transmitted (making it hard to eavesdrop), its encryption is relatively weak since all customers receive the same key.

For enhanced security, customers can install their own certificate by purchasing one from a commercial vendor (such as Thawte, Verisign, or InstantSSL or others) or by using OpenSSL to generate a self-signed certificate.
