Summary

The existence of /etc/nologin file prevents login.

Issue

The existence of an /etc/nologin file prevents user login. Login appears to succeed, but the user is immediately logged out. BoKS LOG shows both the login and logout as successful.

For example:

07/03/14 14:36:10 master.foo.bar pts/4 student1 sshd Successful login (ssh shell using psw from 192.168.3.1)
07/03/14 14:36:10 master.foo.bar pts/4 student1 sshd Logout

This feature is intended for system maintenance. When an /etc/nologin file exists, only root is able to login.

Resolution / Workaround

When the /etc/nologin file is removed, normal behavior is restored.
