Before You Upgrade

  1. Confirm that the OS/400 is version V5R1 or above.
  2. Make sure that:
    1. FTP is running on the iSeries LPAR where you are installing WINSPOOL.
    2. Your account has the required system credentials.
Note: If your account does not have the required system credentials, use QSECOFR or another account with *ALLOBJ special authority.
  3. On the FTP server, make sure that NAMEFMT is set to 1, not 0.
Note: NAMEFMT is set to 1 on most FTP servers.
  4. If you are using FTP exit programs, create an exception or temporarily disable them during this installation.
  5. No additional license is required when performing an upgrade, assuming the serial, model, and LPAR numbers are the same. If you are upgrading your system as well, please apply for a temporary license.
  6. On a Windows system on the same network as the iSeries, download the WINSPOOL FTP installer.
  7. Execute winspool.exe.

Back up your existing library

  1. Option 1
Run the following command on an iSeries command line as a security officer. This works well, assuming there are not a lot of object locks on the WINSPOOL library. RNMOBJ OBJ(QSYS/WINSPOOL) OBJTYPE(*LIB) NEWOBJ(WINSPLBAK)
  2. Option 2
Run the following command on an iSeries command line as a security officer. This works well, even if there are locks on the WINSPOOL library; these locks will be forcefully removed when the library is cleared. CPYLIB FROMLIB(WINSPOOL) TOLIB(WINSPLBAK)

Run the Installer

  1. From the location where you saved the downloaded installer file, right-click on the file and click Run as administrator.

This will unzip the temporary files to C:\pcsinst and launch the FTP library installer.

  2. If you get the pop-up windows that asks, “Do you want to allow this app to make changes to your device?”, click Yes.
  3. Click Next.
  4. At the Select Installation Folder window, click Next.
  5. At the Ready to Install window, click Install.
  6. Click Finish to exit the Setup Wizard
  7. Enter the path where you wish to save the PC file, otherwise leave alone to accept the default.
  8. Select the IBM i Library name for the product you are installing
  9. Specify the IP address of the LPAR you wish to install to, along with the User and Password of the security officer account you wish to use for performing the install.
  10. Click on Step 1-Connect to IBM i, and click on each button in sequence, waiting for each operation to complete before proceeding to the next.

Informational messages will display at the bottom, as will errors messages, if any errors occur.
